Honorable Mention

"US Department of Defense"
Many Sources - 1980

The Department of Defense has banned the use of pennies in their foreign base exchanges (Army & Airforce) since 1980.

Way to go DOD! We salute those individuals in the DOD who have banned the use of the penny. Wish all would do it.

"Chipotle Mexican Grill Restaurants Drop The Penny"
The New YorkTimes - Aug 2012

We would like to take our hats off to several Chipotle Restaurants for taking the initiative and removing the penny from their restaurants. Initally, they tried rounding up or down to the nearest nickel, but received a few negative comments when the customers tab was rounded up by .02 cents, so those restaurants changed to just round down to the nearest nickel. Their fractional losses during the day are far out weighed by the labor savings in not having to count pennies in their cash draw at the end of each shift.

Way to go Chipotle. We salute those Chipotle restaurants who are doing this. Wish all would do it.

"Thirty Below Leather"
Shopper Testimonial - Aug 2006

We would like to take our hats off to Thirty Below Leather store in beautiful Estes Park, Colorado for taking the initiative by removing the penny (and all coins) from their store. They just didn't see the need for any change. All merchandise in their store is intentially priced so as to come out to an even dollar amount between $1 to $29 (including tax) at the register. That's correct, .. NO Change in their cash register and everything in their store is less than $30 .. thus "Thirty Below Leather".

Way to go Thirty Below Leather. We salute you for what you are doing. Wish more stores would do this.

"5 Napkin Burger Restaurants"
The Wall Street Journal - May 6, 2011

We would like to take our hats off to the 5 Napkin Burger Restaurants in New York and Boston for taking the initiative rounding down all transactions to the nearest nickel. They just didn't see the need for any pennies and wanted to give the customer more value for their purchase.

Way to go 5 Napkin Burgers. We salute you for what you are doing. Wish more stores would do this.

"Concord Teacakes"
Boston Globe, Boston.com - Feb 9, 2009

We would like to take our hats off to Judy Fersh of Corcord Teacakes Bakery in Concord, Massachusetts for taking the initiative of rounding down all transactions to the nearest nickel.

Way to go Concord Teacakes. We salute you for what you are doing. Wish more stores would do this.
